Japanese Hamburg Steak

From my kitchen in Japan

Hamburg steak is not a hamburger in a bun. In Japan it is a plated home dish—an oval meat patty served with sauce, rice and side vegetables.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef500 g
  • Ground pork500 g
  • Onions2
  • Milk240 ml
  • Breadcrumbs48 g
  • Salt8 g
  • Pepper1/2 tsp
  • Nutmeg0.4 g
  • Worcestershire sauce3 tbsp
  • Ketchup3 tbsp

How to make it

  1. Finely chop and cook the onions until softened, then cool. Soak breadcrumbs in the milk.
  2. Mix beef, pork, cooled onion, soaked breadcrumbs, salt, pepper and nutmeg until cohesive. Shape into oval patties and remove air pockets.
  3. Cook the patties in a frying pan until browned on both sides and cooked through.
  4. Mix ketchup and Worcestershire sauce in the pan juices and serve over the hamburg steaks.
